Ebenezer Junior School in Kyanjiri, Uganda is the only school in the village — the sole place of learning for 200 children aged 5 to 16. Despite serving as the educational heart of the community, the school lacked basic safety infrastructure: no perimeter fencing to define and secure the grounds, no security lighting for early morning and evening activities, and no lightning protection for a region that experiences frequent and severe electrical storms.
The Ebenezer Safety & Security project addressed these risks directly. Blue Solaris funded and oversaw the installation of security lights across the school compound, lightning grounding poles to protect against electrical strikes, and a perimeter fence enclosing the entire school grounds — creating a defined, secure environment for students and staff.
The project was completed in January 2025. The local council, upon reviewing the finished work, expressed admiration for the speed and quality of implementation — a testament to the efficiency of Blue Solaris's on-the-ground partnerships and project management approach.
"The local council was impressed with the efficiency of implementation."
— Community response, Kyanjiri, Uganda · January 2025
Physical safety is a prerequisite for learning. Children cannot focus on education when they feel unsafe, and teachers cannot deliver quality instruction in an environment where basic hazards go unaddressed. In Kyanjiri, the absence of a perimeter fence meant the school grounds were open to outside intrusion; the lack of lightning protection posed a genuine risk to life during storm season.
By investing in safety infrastructure, Blue Solaris created the conditions for every other education investment — uniforms, teacher training, the cafeteria — to have maximum impact. A secure, well-lit school compound also signals to the community that this institution is valued and worth protecting, reinforcing attendance and community ownership of the school.
The completed safety infrastructure now protects all 200 students and 9 staff members at Ebenezer Junior School every day. The perimeter fence has defined the school as a secure space, reducing unauthorized access and giving parents greater confidence in their children's safety. Security lighting extends the usable hours of the compound and deters nighttime intrusion.
The local council's response — noting the efficiency and quality of the work — reflects the broader community impact of the project. When local leadership sees international partners deliver on their commitments quickly and well, it builds the trust and goodwill that makes future collaboration possible.
